The Meaningful Mother's Day Planter
I created The Meaningful Mother’s Day Planter and accompanying tutorial as a tribute to all those who fill a motherhood role as well as to you, who feel called to give something meaningful to a mother or mother figure. As the creator of this planter, you will customize it to create a seasonal gift, inspired by the mother or mother figure in your life, that is overflowing with sentiment and usefulness. -
Fresh and Foraged Cedar Swag
These timeless, aromatic botanical bunches look beautiful adorning a door or hanging over your stove. Representing strength and protection, cedar and eucalyptus are among my favorite botanicals to use for handmade wreathes, swag, and garland. -
Cedar & Spice Aromatherapy Sachets
These sewn aromatherapy sachet pillows are beautiful, low-cost, low-waste, and make useful gifts. Best of all, the materials were collected from around our home and land. The only cost was my time, which was well spent with my daughter on her first snow day of the season. I used herbs that I dried over this past growing season and homemade vanilla extract. -
Transforming a Garden into a Gathering Space
But how did my garden transform from a plot of wooden beds to a tranquil backyard sanctuary? I’ve laid it all out below, and many of these same concepts can be applied to any outdoor space including back patios and apartment balconies. -
Pressing Botanicals
One of the most beautiful Mother’s Day gifts I’ve ever received from my husband was this handmade flower press. Made of live edge, air-dried walnut and finished with a French polish and wax, it literally took my breath away! Until then, I had used whatever heavy books I could find around the house to press botanicals. -
Naturally Dyeing Eggs
Well, it’s official. We’ll never buy artificial store-bought dye packs again. We naturally dyed our flock’s eggs this year and are blown away by the gorgeous variations of rich, vibrant colors and textures. -
Homemade Calendula Salve
Last summer's calendula has been put to great use. In addition to saving hundreds of seeds, I have enjoyed making infused calendula oils, lotion bars and salves. To infuse oil in this way is to infuse it with history. Calendula salve is a wonderful skin care remedy to have on hand in your home, as it can help sooth dry skin, rashes, bug bites, minor cuts and scrapes, and minor burns too. It is versatile and gentle enough for all ages to use, making it great for gifting as well.

Low-Waste Bird Seed Valentine
We love to birdwatch on our homestead so when I saw these homemade heart-shaped bird seed ornaments on Pinterest, I knew they'd make the perfect low-waste, handmade Valentine's this year. This craft stretches across a wide range of ages and gives the kids a great opportunity to practice measurements, fill molds, count, scissor skills, writing their names, and tying. It's the perfect rainy day activity, a great alternative to candy or plastic trinket Valentine's, and your feathered friends will be grateful. -
Fairy Pumpkin Cottage
Here at Cedar House Farm, building a pumpkin fairy cottage has quickly become one of my children’s favorite autumn traditions. It is an opportunity for our family to forage in the fresh air, brainstorm and create together with natural materials. It's an opportunity for your children to let their imaginations run wild and for us to witness how much joy outdoor adventures bring them. And the end product provides weeks of imaginary play. -
Herbal and Orchard Garland
I call this my Herbal and Orchard Garland. It beautifully weaves together my love for gardening, herbalism, and home décor. The herbs I used here were grown from seed in my greenhouse and garden and were added to the garland fresh alongside dried fruit from our small orchard. This garland is multifunctional and can be used year-round to decorate your mantle, window frames, banisters, chicken coops and barn doors. It can also added to a fresh evergreen holiday wreath or Christmas tree! -
Tips for Drying and Freezing Herbs
Grown, gathered and dried. Yesterday was for harvesting herbs from the garden. I do this every couple weeks throughout the summer. It’s a quiet, slow, fragrant task that I truly enjoy. Here are a couple tips to keep in mind when storing your kitchen herbs:
