Historically given as a token of gratitude for a lovely time had, these nostalgic, delicate, and amazingly fragrant sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) are a must-have in every cottage garden. This pastel mix makes beautiful additions to flower arrangements.
Botanical meaning: blissful pleasure
Sweet peas must be started very early. Start seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before last frost and transplant out after all danger of frost has passed. Before sowing, soak the seeds in water overnight. Trellis or support these early on so they can grow tall and their tendrils have something to hold on to.
These flowers have a relatively short life in vase. I recommend adding a couple pinches of sugar to the vase water and changing it out daily to extend vase life. Or just enjoy their beauty in your garden.
I love sweet peas for their sweet-smelling, heavenly presence. They are absolutely one of my family’s favorite flowers in the garden and I am thrilled to share them with you.
(Warning: all parts of this plant are poisonous to animals.)
